Bringing Worn Leather Back to Life

Happy Leather After is a leather repair and restoration business based at South Hetton in east Durham, working across the North East.

Most leather furniture that gets thrown away did not need to be. The frame is usually sound, the springs are usually working and the cushions are usually the right shape. What has failed is a coating a fraction of a millimetre thick — and that is a repair, not a reason to buy a new suite.

That is the idea the business is built on. We repair leather that has cracked, faded, scuffed or burnt, and we rebuild seats that have lost their support. Where a repair will give you a result you are happy with, we will tell you so and quote for it. Where it will not, we will tell you that too, rather than take on work that is going to disappoint.

The work itself is detail work. A repair is only as good as it is invisible, and the difference between a good colour match and a near-miss is not the colour — it is the preparation underneath and the sheen on top. Cutting either of those short is what makes a repair look like a repair.

Nearly all of it is done in your own home. Furniture rarely comes out of a room as easily as it went in, and moving a large suite twice adds cost and risk to a job that does not need either.

How we work

Repair rather than replace, wherever that is the honest answer

Quoting starts with photographs. It is quicker for you, it costs nothing, and it means nobody spends an afternoon arranging a visit for a piece of furniture that turns out not to be worth repairing. Send a close-up of the damage and one shot of the whole piece, and that is usually enough.

We work on sofas, armchairs, recliners, dining chairs and leather car interiors. Colour and surface restoration is leather only; spring, webbing and seat work applies to fabric furniture too, because that repair is about the structure underneath rather than the covering.

Being based in east Durham puts most of the region within comfortable reach. Durham, Peterlee and Sunderland are close by; Newcastle, South Tyneside and Washington are regular runs; and Darlington and Teesside sit at the southern end of the patch, where visits are planned rather than arranged at short notice.

There is a sustainability argument in all of this as well. A three-piece suite is a large, awkward thing to dispose of, and very little of one gets recycled. Keeping furniture in use for another decade is the better outcome by almost any measure.

Our approach

What you can expect

Specialist repair work

Leather repair and seat rebuilding are the whole of what we do, not a sideline to cleaning or upholstery. The work is judged on how well a repair disappears into the piece around it.

Colour matching taken seriously

Colour is matched against an unworn part of your own furniture, and the sheen is matched as well as the shade — a repair in the right colour with the wrong finish still shows.

Repair rather than replacement

Where a frame is sound and the damage is on the surface, repair is usually the proportionate answer. Where it genuinely is not worth repairing, we will tell you that instead.

Furniture and car seats

Sofas, chairs, recliners and dining seating, plus leather car interiors. The same colour and surface work applies to both, with different materials and finishes.

Quotes from photographs

Send pictures and get a written quote before anyone visits. It saves you an appointment for a job that might not have been worth doing.
